A few days ago the rumor mill once again united Sergio Canales with Betis. The possibility of the player leaving Rayados to join Manuel Pellegrini’s doctrine again fell very positively on the green and white fans. However, the 33-year-old footballer has flatly denied this possibility of returning to the Heliopolitan club: «Today, There is no possibility of me leaving Rayados. They show me every day that they are very happy and that the goal is to achieve championships.”
Canales has been so blunt in an interview for Canal Sur Radio, in which he narrated how he experienced the news from Mexico. «It was crazy, I don’t know where it came from. I woke up one day and had 50 messages from friend groups. People saying that I had not warned them… There is no truth in that, Betis is very good and I am also very good. I am focused on being a champion, I am present and that does not cross my mind. Obviously I love Betis very much, and I could never close the door on them. I love him like I could love Racing, but right now there is nothing at all. I have not spoken to anyone and there is no interest from any of the parties,” explained the Cantabrian.
Questioned about his relationship with PellegriniCanales has acknowledged that they have not maintained contact with the Chilean, but that he retains a “great memory of him”: “Manuel is one of the best coaches I have ever had.. I have always had very good memories of him and, as time has passed, I value having shared time with him.”
However, the player has acknowledged that his time at Betis, and with Manuel Pellegrinihad ended when he decided to leave: «My time with Pellegrini was over, it grew cold. There came a time, after the end of the season, when I realized that my cycle was over, just as it has happened with many teammates. “If it had been just me… but there has been a very rapid change of cycle.”
«I realized it because I think it was very important for Betis to give 100% in every way. Knowing that every day you are going to give 100% and that they are going to get it from you. I think I had reached my ceiling, I had finished the cycle and, probably, it was going to cost me a lot the next season. We talked about it as people, I was also grateful that they understood me, it was before I knew that I had the possibility of going to Rayados,” he added.
Furthermore, Canales has recognized that his new coach, Martín Demichelis, has many similarities with Manuel Pellegrini. In fact, when the Chilean arrived on the green and white bench, the Argentine was linked to the ‘Engineer’ team: “He looks like Pellegrini in the way he works defensively, he is very similar. In some workouts there are exercises that are familiar to me. “He is very young with a good group and for a coach that is fundamental.”
Given the possibility of return to Betis in the futurethe player has been reluctant to contemplate that possibility, although he has admitted that both the green and white club and Racing “would not close any door”: “I love Betis very much and I would never close any door, but it is very difficult for me to think about the future . Your head goes away, I think you have to give everything you have to give in the place you are in. If that situation ever comes, I will see it at that time. Betis is the club that has marked me the most in my career along with Racing and I am very grateful to them.”
Regarding the decision to go to Mexico, Canales explained that he did so so as not to have to compete against Betis: “I didn’t feel strong.” And he has been flattered after receiving so many words of affection from the Betic fans these days. «This shows the affection there is, it is a reality and it is something mutual. I don’t take it the wrong way at all. “Just clarifying that they are facts that are not true, also out of respect for the place where I am.”
“I didn’t watch the derby, it makes me too nervous”
Furthermore, the Rayados player has admitted that he follows Betis and that he likes what he sees: «I watch all the games I can, it is a reality. I want him to win, I love to see that there is a change in the cycle and that new players arrive. It’s a joy to see how he competes. Against Athletic they competed great, it is very difficult to get a point from there. Pellegrini is top, he gets very good performance out of his teams and his ideas are very clear.”
However, Canales has revealed that he did not watch the Seville derby, because “he was not going to enjoy it”, so that day he went out to eat and did not look at the result until the match was over: “It is the only match that I haven’t seen It’s a derby, I wasn’t going to enjoy it, both for better and for worse. It makes me very nervous. I wasn’t seeing the result until the game was over. I was lucky enough to win the first derby I experienced, then the most important game I have played as a ‘classic’ for what it meant was the Cup, in which we ended up being champions.
Questioned about Betis’ streak in derbies, which usually competes worse than its rival, Canales has attributed it to a mental issue: “It’s something that suffocates. You have to break that ceiling to break with that situation. Here with Tigres we are in a similar situation and we have managed to change that rule. You have to win two derbies in a row so that they are the ones who enter that loop, because it is more related to that fear that that match generates than to the level of play, which Betis is obviously much more superior.”
