Bicocca University, Vanvitelli and National Institute of Nuclear Physics together for the Anthem project, a Bnct (Boron neutron capture therapy) radiotherapy capable of hitting only oncological cells, sparing healthy ones. A project that has obtained ten million from the Campania Region, after the Council approved the contribution destined for the construction of new equipment for the treatment of oncological diseases, in the ex Ciapi real estate complex, owned by the Region and granted for use to the “Luigi Vanvitelli” University.
The revolutionary radiotherapy system – a note reports – will allow to hit only the neoplastic cells while sparing healthy cells, making radiotherapy in cancer patients much more effective, but above all safer, and in particular in elderly and frail cancer patients. It will be the first machine of its kind in all of Central and Southern Italy, the second in all of Italy – it says – In the Project, in particular, the INFN has as its objective the construction of the machine, while the Vanvitelli University is committed to setting up the spaces necessary for the installation: approximately 2000 square meters in which areas dedicated to research and clinical activities for Vanvitelli researchers are planned, suitable for the containment and operation of this world-leading therapeutic instrument. A tool that will make the Campania Region a European reference center for cancer therapy.
“The realization of this project – commented the Rector of the Vanvitelli University Giovanni Francesco Nicoletti – will make the Campania Region, and therefore our University, a European reference center for oncological therapy. Thanks to the Pnrr funds and the synergy with the Bicocca University and the INFN, many researchers will be able to work with these revolutionary instruments and both research and clinical therapies will benefit from such a high-level technological park. It will be a spearhead in a University that already boasts several records in the oncology field and more generally in that of international scientific research”.
