The Colombian Camilo Villegas made the cut this Friday for the Masters, the first Major of the year, on his return to the tournament after nine years and after 13 years of winning it for the last time. He achieved it on a very difficult day for all participants, in which there were only 8 cards under par.
Villegas finished the day with 75 strokes (+3) and accumulated 149 (+5), which meant he was at the limit for almost the entire afternoon. Then the cutoff dropped to +6. The 50 best players, plus ties, will be from this Saturday in the last two rounds on the Augusta National Golf Club course.
At the top, the world number one, the American Scottie Scheffler, remained at the top of the tournament, although now sharing it with his compatriots Bryson DeChambeau and Max Homa, all with 138 hits (-6).
Scheffler, spearhead of the PGA Tour members, is looking for his second green jacket, after winning the tournament in 2022.
The best card of the day was delivered by the Swede Ludvig Aberg, with 69 strokes (-3). He was the only one who dropped below 70 this Friday and that was enough for him to climb 28 positions, to seventh place.
The defending champion, the Spanish Jon Rahm, also managed to save his continuity with the same total as Villegas, 149 strokes, but he will have an uphill road in the last two rounds.
The wind and the speed of the greens made the day very complicated and thus, the Augusta National course took its toll on several illustrious players who will not be there for the weekend.
Among the victims of the field are the Spanish Sergio García, the Americans Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson and the Swede Viktor Hovland, winner of the FedEx Cup last year.
