During the Day of the Devs also came the announcement of Cairnsthe new game from the French indie team The Game Bakers, authors of Furi and Haven, which presents itself as a sort of climbing simulation with survival elementspresented with trailer and first images.
It is a title that aims to reproduce in a rather realistic way some elements of climbing on rock and ice, which leads us to follow Aava’s ascent towards an extremely challenging peak, accomplishing the feat of a lifetime for this professional climber.
The developers call it a “survival climber“, effectively creating a sort of new genre in the world of video games, that is, a survival closely linked to the dynamics of climbing and with realistic elements but also some imaginative interpretations, as demonstrated by some of the technological supports used by the protagonist.
A hybrid game between climbing and survival
The idea of a game focused on climbing is not new and, recently, we have also seen it applied by Jusant, but in this case the interpretation is more centered on the real technique of mountaineering and on a realistic management of resources and tools to make the ascent to the summit.
Cairn is therefore mainly a climbing simulation, but with various survival elements included: it will therefore be necessary to analyze the wall, understand which holds are the best and choose the path to follow to try to get higher and higher, measuring energy and using the tools at their best.
As reported by The Game Bakers, “We’ve created a new kind of climbing simulation. It feels extremely natural and intuitive, but the challenges of the mountain will test players’ resolve.”
Arriving after two games of great interest such as Furi and Haven, this Cairn is certainly one to keep an eye on, with release on PC and console scheduled for 2025 but still without a precise date.
