For decades, if not centuries, the most ingenious minds have dreamed of autonomous driving. Vehicles capable of moving on their own without the need for a human being to control them. This technology, which could well be a dream of Isaac Asimov himself, is getting closer to materializing. Companies are fighting among themselves to be the first to launch the long-awaited autonomous driving on the market. From China, From BYD, they assure that they will soon announce important newsin the next month of November without going any further.
BYD and Tesla maintain a war of numbers and technology. The two companies are leaders in electric vehicles. Registrations are at par and although those from Shenzhen promise to end the year as the largest electric car manufacturer in the world, those from Austin are not giving up. The final battle will be settled on December 31 and everyone assumes that it will be tighter than ever. There is likely to be a change in trend for the first time in a decade, but this time we must focus not on registrations but on technology.
Autonomous driving focuses a large part of the brands’ efforts
Experts and visionaries recognize that autonomous driving is the future of the industry. All brands, without exception, are working on the development of self-piloted systems that eliminate humans from the equation. We will become simple passengers in our own cars. At least that’s what they announce from the brands’ engineering departments. Tesla is especially focused on matter. Just two weeks ago, Elon Musk presented his concept of autonomous mobility to the world with two different products, the Cybercab and the Cybervan. Driverless passenger transport vehicles.
Although Musk himself assured that the Robotaxi would be available from 2026, BYD now assures that it is ready to launch its own intelligent driving system. It is an important step for the brand, since until now it had trusted the technology to third-party companies. DiPilot, BYD’s computing platform, will be offered in various configurations depending on available processing power. The DiPilot 100, designed for systems with 100 TOPS (trillion operations per second) or less, will use Nvidia’s Drive Orin N chip and Horizon Robotics’ Journey 5 chip. For more capable vehicles, the DiPilot 300 and DiPilot 600 will take advantage of Nvidia’s Orin X chip, which offers up to 508 TOPS of processing power.
In vernacular: BYD has everything ready to replace its current driver assistance systems, manufactured by third parties, with its own. Obviously, we are not talking about total autonomous driving, but the change and rapid evolution of Chinese engineers predicts accelerated development from this first step. The initial release of the internal algorithms of BYD will focus on models priced above 200,000 yuan, approximately 25,340 euros. In the future, in 2025, the company plans to democratize the technology with the aim of equipping cheaper models with systems with high-level intelligent driving capabilities.
