A “national conference” that brings together the living forces will be held in Burkina Faso on 14 and 15 October with the aim of appointing a transitional president before organizing elections, according to a presidential decree issued on Saturday.
“In light of the adoption of the Transitional Charter, a national conference will be held on 14 and 15 October” in the capital, Ouagadougou, according to a decree signed by Captain Ibrahim Traore, who took power in a coup a week ago and was appointed interim president.
Captain Traore, who was officially appointed president of Burkina Faso on Wednesday, had announced two days ago that he would only manage “day-to-day affairs” until the appointment of a new transitional president, civilian or military, at the conclusion of a “national conference” that would be held “before the end of the year”.
And participate in the national conference, which will appoint the new president, representatives of political and social forces and civil society.
Traore, 34, ousted Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaugo Damiba, who in turn came to power in a coup in January 2022, ousting elected President Roch Marc Christian Kabore.
After a meeting on Tuesday with a delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Traore stressed that his country will continue to respect the commitments it made during the Damiba era, particularly with regard to the organization of elections and the return of civilians to power no later than July 2024.
