Throughout the video game industry there have always been cancelled projects, which for one reason or another did not come to light, either due to marketing issues, a change of ideas or even the simple fact that more money was needed to shape them. And according to a new report, it seems that a new Bungie title was being planned, which would have been scrapped by the developer itself.
Earlier this week, the company shocked fans by announcing a second round of mass layoffs in just two years, affecting more than 220 employees and cutting roughly 17% of its workforce. Among those laid off was Kwan Perngnarrative leader of the expansion The Final Shapesuggesting that its success was not enough to prevent cuts.
With the departure, fans fear that future projects will be affected, and according to the industry insider Jeff Grubbthese fears have been confirmed. In the most recent episode of Game Mess Mornings, Grubb revealed that the layoffs have forced Bungie to archive indefinitely Paybackwhich was supposedly the internal codename for the upcoming Destiny.
Here is what was mentioned:
What’s on hold is Payback. This is the leaked project that was reported to be Destiny 3, though internally it was being referred to as ‘the next Destiny’. I don’t know if the distinction is clear, but they think it’s important. However, this project is now shelved indefinitely, from what I’ve been told.
In the end it was stated that Destiny 3 It has not been archived as it was “never in development”, and that Project Payback had been cancelled before the layoffs earlier this week. This being a spinoff of the franchise.
