British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace made an emergency trip to the United States to discuss the growing nuclear threat due to the crisis in Ukraine. British newspaper reports Evening Standard.
According to the publication, Wallace canceled his speech before the Committee on Protecting the Commons on October 18 and flew to the United States to attend summits at the Pentagon and the White House.
As Undersecretary of Defense James Hippie elaborated, Wallace met with US counterparts for “talks that are really incredible because we are at a time when such talks are needed.”
On the eve of October 17, former US State Department official Peter van Buuren expressed the opinion that Russian President Vladimir Putin has no reason to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine. According to him, statements about the alleged possibility of Russia’s use of nuclear weapons make no sense, since Putin clearly understands that Moscow is not in danger of losing the Ukrainian conflict.
On the eve of October 16, the White House announced the US response to the Russian nuclear strike “regardless of its scale.” They added that the US, along with NATO allies and other countries such as China and India, are working to send a clear and strong signal to Russia that it “should not consider using nuclear weapons in this conflict.”
On September 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a televised address, drew attention to the statements of some high-ranking representatives of the leading NATO states about the possibility and admissibility of using nuclear weapons against Russia. He stressed that nuclear blackmail was used by the West.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly noted that the West is trying to groundlessly convict Moscow of wanting to use weapons of mass destruction, while Russia does not participate in the nuclear rhetoric of Western capitals.
On September 30, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov stressed that only those people who behave irresponsibly talk about nuclear escalation in the world.
Russia continues to conduct a special operation to protect Donbass. The decision was made against the backdrop of the aggravated situation in the region due to increased shelling by Ukrainian troops.
