Britain’s opposition Labor Party won a seat in the House of Commons in northern England yesterday, inflicting a heavy loss on the ruling Conservative Party at the start of what appears to be a painful round of results for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
The landslide victory set the tone for two anticipated days during which local election results will be announced before this year’s general election, which opinion polls show could bring Labor leader Keir Starmer to power and end the Conservative government’s 14-year reign.
Voters cast their votes yesterday to choose candidates for more than 2,000 local authority seats across England and a number of mayors of several cities, including the capital, London. The seat of Blackpool South was the only one in the House of Commons available for a vote after the incumbent, who was elected in 2019 as a Conservative candidate, resigned over a lobbying scandal. Counting is underway in 107 local councils in England and Wales, while the results of the local elections continue to appear, as a third of the votes have been counted for 35 councils, as the ruling Conservative Party faces results that are not positive, at least, in the party losing its defensive seats so far, with a loss in the by-elections for a seat. Parliamentarian for South Blackpool. Labor lost control of Oldham district councils to independents.
