Nigel Farage, the politician who helped champion Britain’s exit from the European Union, said on Monday he will stand in next month’s election and lead the Reform Party in a blow to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The decision by Farage, now a broadcaster and previously honorary president of Reform, will raise the profile of his movement and challenge Sunak’s ruling Conservatives for support from right-wing voters.
Farage, 60, had previously said he would not turn up in the July 4 vote to help his friend Donald Trump fight in the United States. «I have decided that I have changed my mind» Farage said at a press conference. “It’s not always a sign of weakness, it could potentially be a sign of strength.”
Farage has unsuccessfully stood for parliament seven times, but is still one of the most influential British politicians of his generation.
