That is quite a breakthrough, that you can charge 160 km in 4 minutes.
Recently the undersigned was filling the old man's BMW 116d with satanic juice. For fun, I kept track of how long it actually takes to refuel the car. After all, it is an exercise that will take you about fifteen minutes. Refueling takes easily 5-6 minutes, then you have to stand in line to pay. Oh, and you should always say that you are NOT interested in two Balistos for the price of three. So to be recalcitrant, you take all the filled cookies with you.
But all that nonsense also takes time. And with an EV, some things are really more pleasant. If you can charge at home, you always drive away with a full battery. And you first throw an EV at the charging station, then you go get coffee and try to say no to the freshly filled cookies. And the Balistos. But while you are busy with that struggle, the car is at the charging station.
Charging 160 km in 4 minutes
And that will soon be much, much faster. StoreDot reports this. That is a company from Israel that develops batteries. Not so long ago they had developed a battery that made it possible to recharge 160 km in 5 minutes. That was really unprecedented at the time. They have not been sitting idle at StoreDot, because they now have a battery that allows you to charge 160 km in just 4 minutes.
First of all, a bit of a downer: both batteries are still in the prototype stage. However, the development of batteries is expected to proceed much faster. At StoreDot they could never have imagined that they already have a battery that can charge 160 km in 4 minutes. The prototype that achieved the 160 km range in 5 minutes will most likely go into production in 2026, much earlier than expected.
But how?
What is special is that StoreDot does not work with lithium-ion batteries. They are a bit secretive about it, but they do want to say that silicon is used. Cool. The most important advantage is that the energy density is much greater than with a regular battery. This has the advantage that the battery does not have to be as large, plus it weighs less.
It is not known when we will encounter the StoreDot batteries in which cars. StoreDot is currently working with Polestar.
