The dream was gold, but the silver medal was greatly celebrated, on Thursday night (26), by the Brazilian women’s volleyball team at the Pan American Games, which are being played in Santiago (Chile). This is because Brazil, which was represented in the competition by a team made up of young athletes, was defeated in the decision, by 3 sets to 0 (26/24, 25/16 and 25/19), by the main team from the Dominican Republic. , who has just secured qualification for the Paris Olympic Games.
“These young people gained experience, 11 of them had never played in a Pan American. Some of them had never worn the Brazilian national team shirt. We trained for 10 days, we had some important absences. We made the most of it, a great group stage without losing a single set, a huge challenge given the volume of Mexico’s game. It’s a shame about the first set, because if we had managed to finish [o set], the confidence could be different for a young team, we could put pressure on the Dominican Republic. But ifs and maybes don’t exist in sport and we’re going to leave with our heads held high”, declared coach Paulo Coco after the match.
Historic boxing campaign

Even before the end of the current edition of the Pan-Americans, it is possible to say that the Brazilian boxing team is completing a historic campaign in the competition in Santiago. This is because, after the end of the fights this Thursday (26), the sport has already broken the record for medals won in a single edition of the Games with 12 podiums (the best mark until then was nine, in São Paulo, in 1963 ).
Out of 13 possible finals, the Brazilians will be present in nine. The last classified were Carolina Almeida, Jucielen Romeu, Barbara Santos, Michael Douglas Trindade, Wanderley Pereira and Abner Teixeira, who won their matches on Thursday afternoon. Earlier, Tatiana Chagas, Beatriz Ferreira and Keno Marley Machado had already reached the final. All finalists also guaranteed a place in the next edition of the Olympic Games (Bia and Jucielen had already had their passports stamped when they reached the semi-finals).
“We prepared very hard. The teams were angry with us, complaining about everything, because it was really pushed. But that meant we had an extraordinary campaign. Now we’re going to look for at least three gold medals to lead the sport’s medal table. We reached five finals in the women’s and four in the men’s. We exceeded our target, which was seven qualifications for the Games, and we will look for the other four places in the qualifiers at the end of February. We are going to seek the record for golds away from home and, who knows, we will be able to equal or surpass São Paulo 1963”, declared the head coach of the Brazilian boxing team, Mateus Alves.
