According to a survey by the NGO Terra de Direitos e Justiça Global, 50% of victims are black.
In the 2 months leading up to the 1st round of the 2022 elections, the number of episodes of political violence jumped to 121. This means that, from August 1 to October 2, 2022, about 2 cases were recorded per day. The targets were 113 political agents, most of them linked to left-wing parties such as PT and Psol.
The data are from the 2nd edition of the Political and Electoral Violence survey in Brazil, published by the NGO Land of Rights and Global Justice on Monday (10.Oct.2022). Here’s the intact (14 MB).
The cases were found by monitoring news on internet search platforms and social networks. The research considered only episodes of violence in which there was direct participation of political-institutional agents or party leaders.
The researchers also compiled the numbers of political violence for the last 2 years, from September 2, 2020 and October 2, 2022. In that period, there were 523 episodes of the type involving 482 people. The number includes: 54 murders, 109 attacks, 151 threats, 94 assaults, 104 offenses, 6 criminalization cases and 5 invasion cases.
In 2022 alone, as of October 2, there were 247 cases. The number of incidents more than doubled from the 12 months of the previous year, when 125 were recorded. In 2020, when municipal elections were held, there were 151 episodes of political violence. In 2018, the year of the last general elections, 46.

Despite the rise in the general scenario, the number of murders has dropped. It went from 19 in 2021 to 8 in 2022. In 2020, 40 were registered.
The biggest increase was in the number of threats, which hit a record this year, with 85. Previously, the peak had been in 2019, with 57 threats.

Most of the cases in the electoral period happened in the Southeast region, with 58 occurrences. Then come the Northeast (25), Midwest (17), North (9) and South (8).
The parties that were most victims of violence were the PT, of former president and candidate for the Planalto Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with 21 occurrences. Then came Psol, with 17; and the PL, of President Jair Bolsonaro, who is running for reelection, with 11 occurrences of electoral violence.
Also according to the survey, 50% of victims of political violence in Brazil are black. The repeat offenders are mostly black congressmen, women, LGBTQIA+ and human rights defenders.
