Country moved to 89th place in a list of 193 countries; despite this, performance improved after 2 years of decline
Brazil fell two positions in the HDI (Human Development Index) ranking, according to a report released this Wednesday (13.mar.2024) by UN (United Nations National Organization). Now, the country occupies 89th position on the list of 193 countries prepared by UNDP (United Nations Development Programme).
Despite the change, Brazil returned to growth after 2 years of falling HDI. Even so, it is still at a lower level than the pre-pandemic period. The index measures data such as life expectancy, income and education, ranging from 0 to 1. The closer to 1, the better the performance in this regard. Here's the complete of the survey (PDF – 5MB).
The data collected to prepare the ranking are from 2022. The country achieved an assessment of 0.760. Before the pandemic, Brazil occupied position 84 on the list, with a score of 0.766.
Despite this, the country remains slightly above the world average, at 0.739. The level gives it a place in the group of nations with a high HDI.
In relation to the rest of the world, the HDI advanced, but unevenly. According to the UNDP, recovery from the pandemic years has been a “partial, incomplete and unequal”.
In the list of 193 countries, Switzerland (0.967), Norway (0.966) and Iceland (0.959) lead. Somalia (0.380), South Sudan (0.381) and Central African Republic (0.387) were in the last positions. In relation to South America, Brazil was behind Chile (0.860), Argentina (0.849) and Uruguay (0.830).
According to the UN, one of Brazil's main problems is the difficulty in continuing public policies. This affects the country's current performance in education, for example.
In the rest of the world, the program indicates a moment of polarization and geopolitical division. In addition to the losses from the pandemic, the index was also affected by the wars in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip, fiscal crises and internal conflicts in less developed countries, such as South Sudan and Yemen.
