The discipline had already passed the first screen on Monday, in the executive panel of the IOC, recognizing World Boxing as the federation that would supervise the sport. A decision that ends several years of disputes about the management of this sports modality that premiered in a games in 1904 and has participated in all its editions except in Stockholm 1912 (by Swedish laws).
The IOC had to intervene to organize the competition in Tokyo 2020 and in Paris 2024 after the relations with the International Boxing Association, which Russia led, for financial, governance and ethical reasons. From the International Committee they demanded to find a new new partner, “in whom you could trust more” if they wanted to return to the Olympic program. And a month ago, the IOC recognized World Boxing as the partner to channel the situation with success guarantees.
With seven candidates: Sebastian Coe, Kirsty Coventry, Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr, Johan Eliasch, Morinori Watanabe, David Lappartient and Feisal Al-Hussein.
This has been one of the latest decisions and votes with Thomas Bach in charge, since while the inclusion of boxing in Los Angeles 2028 is decided, the vote is also made to elect the new president of the agency.
