Bosch takes further strategic steps towards a leadership position in the future of mobility, dominated by software. In the future, the company will develop and sell core vehicle software, middleware and cloud services through its sister company ETAS GmbH. Starting in mid-2022, a total of 2,300 experts from the different development areas of Bosch and ETAS will converge into a single unit. “Software development has been a core competence of Bosch for a long time. We install over 200 million electronic control units with our software in vehicles around the world every year. With this new organization, we intend to become a leading provider of vehicle software” said Stefan Hartung, President of Bosch’s Mobility Solutions business.
A year ago Bosch created the Cross-Domain Computing Solutions division with over 17,000 collaborators dedicated to software intensive systems. Today the company brings together its portfolio of vehicle software solutions and the cloud under ETAS. A centralized platform will then be created that will allow software to be developed more quickly and more efficiently together with partners. “Our software base is essential for the digitization of modern software-intensive vehicles” Stefan Hartung explained. Bosch will combine its universal software platform with experience in developing innovative software functions. “In this way we will create a unique proposition and an important competitive advantage for Bosch”Said Markus Heyn, member of the Bosch board. In the future, ETAS will offer its platform and associated development environment to both automotive manufacturers and suppliers.
Until now, the rule was that vehicles were supplied as a finished product. However, in the future, the software of the cars will be constantly improved and expanded throughout its useful life. It will offer drivers a personalized digital driving experience and form the basis for new business models for manufacturers. This development is only in its infancy. Experts predict the automotive software market will be worth billions over the next few years. Between now and 2030, Bosch expects double-digit annual growth. Organizational realignment is proof of this transformation. “In the future development of vehicle operating systems, we want to gain a better position in the global market”Said Heyn. “With this step, we will provide our customers and new ones with an integrated, cross-domain horizontal platform, which will enable them to realize their software-based vehicle objectives.”Added Christoph Hartung, Chairman of the Board of ETAS GmbH. The partnership between Bosch and Microsoft, which began last February, will also continue in the new organization. The aim is to create a complete software platform for uninterrupted connectivity between car and cloud, making it faster and easier to develop vehicle software throughout the life of the car, as well as download from the cloud to ECUs and to on-board computers.
