Maybe it was unconsciousness. Maybe because he had not planned that that morning he was going to end up allegedly murdering someone. But the social media trail of Ismail L., the 18-year-old Moroccan arrested on November 6 in Getafe for the crime of Borja Villacís, has been essential in finding his whereabouts. He was hiding in a most plausible place, his mother’s house, on María Zambrano Avenue. But a confusion in the testimony of witnesses and friends of the former vice mayor’s brother led first to the arrest of a namesake of this third defendant. Five months and two days after the shooting in a place on Monte del Pardo, the Madrid Homicide Group V was completing one of the most dangerous investigations in recent times.
The same day that, during a date to which Borja, 41, went to accompany his friend David to settle some disputes with Kevin P., 25, they were ambushed in a bloody way, the first person was captured. It was María José EJ, 52 years old and Kevin’s mother, who was driving the BMW X2 in which they both went to the open field next to the road and in which, we now know, Ismail was also traveling. The two men were the ones who, in the opinion of investigators, shot Borja and company with a slug gun and a rifle. One of the friends, Luis, ended up injured and miraculously did not die.
A necessary collaborator in the murder and the attempt, she fled behind the wheel and was arrested two hours later at a service station in the Plaza Elíptica. The witnesses and those close to the two who were shot gave the names of the gunmen: Kevin and a young Moroccan whom they knew as “Ismael.” This was corroborated even in that environment to this newspaper at the time. The next day, the agents arrested the first in a squatted house in Yuncos (Toledo) and also shackled a young man close to him in the same place, Ismael EIV, 24 years old, who hours later had to be released.
It was this last young man who gave the clue to those from Homicide Group V, explaining that they must have been wrong about Ismael and that, in reality, they were referring to Ismail L., who had turned 18 three months ago. , of which he provided physical data and a possible Arabic surname.
It was about a boy who is still studying in the Villaverde district, the son of a fishmonger from Mercamadrid and who lived with his mother in Getafe, whose father, Mustapha, is divorced, although they have a good relationship. «My son has always been a good kid. “He is studying, we did not know anything about this matter, he had not told us,” Mustapha explains, surprised by the accusation he faces, to ABC. Ismail is already in prison, notified and without bail, accused of murder and attempted murder.
El Morito
To find his whereabouts, his digital footprint was essential. El Morito, as he calls himself among his friends, has an Instagram account and two Facebook accounts, although he remained little active on them. But there it was and the agents requested from Meta, via judicial order, the telephone number associated with them. The parents appeared behind. This is how the National Police, sources in the case explain, began to track down the at least two homes where the young man could hide: one in Villaverde and another in Getafe. The ‘trunks’ around María Zambrano Avenue in the southern municipality multiplied. Surveillance that was also hindered because the suspect always left without documentation; precisely for that, to avoid being discovered in a random control.
Finally, on November 6, at 7:20 p.m., this male, skinny, with a bad appearance and with a record from when he was a minor, was surprised by Judicial Police officials when leaving his mother’s home. A few meters away, on Isabel Allende Street, he was shackled and taken to the cell. On the advice of his lawyer, he has not acknowledged the facts of which he is accused.
The judicial journey that lies ahead is long. Around two years of instruction are expected in which there is still the possibility of some more arrests.
The deadly dispute that cost the life of Villacís, Ultras Sur and neo-Nazi, came because his friend David had denounced Kevin after burning his car.
