Chilean president, sworn in on March 13, is rejected by 53% of the country; did not meet expectations for political reform
The President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, is disapproved by 53% of the Chilean population in its 7th week in office. Another 36% approve of the government. This is what the poll shows. Cadem released on Tuesday (26.Apr.2022).
Boric, 35 years old, took inauguration on March 13 after beat the right-wing candidate José Antonio Kast by 55.9% to 44.1% of the votes. He started the term with 50% approval and 20% rejection. The result of the 3rd indicates the biggest deterioration of recent popularity in the history of the country. Here’s the intact (2.4 MB, in Spanish).
The early end of the former student leader’s “honeymoon” is accentuated in comparison to his predecessors.
Former President Michelle Bachelet – now a UN High Commissioner –, who ruled Chile from 2006 to 2010 and again from 2014 to 2018, had a 53% approval rating in the same period as the current Boric government. The rejection only surpassed the positive rate in Bachelet’s 2nd term in his 33rd week at the helm of the Palacio de La Moneda.
Already Sebastián Pinera (president from 2010 to 2014 and from 2018 to 2022) had 23% rejection after 6 weeks in office. Despite having also closed the cycle with high disapproval, the negative percentage took 37 weeks to be consolidated in Cadem’s research.
DIDN’T MEET EXPECTATIONS
Gabriel Boric (pronounced “BÔ-rich”) was elected in a close contest against José Antonio Kast, the latter considered a representative of the authoritarian memory of the dictatorial period of former president Augusto Pinochet (1974-1990).
The dispute followed a wave of demonstrations in the country from 2019 to 2020 that called for a profound political reform to overcome the institutional framework granted by Pinochet in 1980. The model was designed in favor of privatization of sectors such as social security and higher education.
Negotiations conducted by then-President Piñera established a Constituent Assembly on July 4, 2021. They decreed a period of 9 to 12 months to write and approve the text and another 60 days to hold a plebiscite that will approve or reject the new Constitution.
To The Country, the desire of the Chilean population for a general reform, which culminated in the election of Boric, is behind the precipitous drop in presidential popularity. He became known in Chile during the student mobilizations of 2011 and 2012. They called for a reformulation of the education model for a public and free system in the country’s universities.
The high inflation of 9.4% per year registered in March, a record for the last 13 years in Chile, also contributed to eroding Boric’s image, especially among the poorest sections of the population.
