F1 is no longer the best for an engineer
“We are no longer the best in terms of salaries offered. Recruiting now under a budget cap regime is based more on passion than simply on the offer of salaries that are difficult to match with other companies as was the case previously”. The wizard of aerodynamics Adrian Newey He underlined that the introduction of the budget cap in F1 has had a boomerang effect that had been underestimated, but which is inevitably influencing the teams' recruitment of engineers who finish their studies.
“When we turn to universities to examine the best students we are no longer number 1 in terms of economic perspective – explained Newey interviewed by the newspaper racingnews365.com – because there are other companies in other sectors that offer higher salaries than ours. Not only are these companies our competitors in the recruitment of new human resources, but they also become a landing point for staff already within Red Bull who want to go and earn more elsewhere.”
The budget cap requires that the three top managers or key figures in the management organization chart of each team have salaries not included in the expense cap, while all the other members of the team are counted. Furthermore, from 2026 it will no longer be possible to present documentation with human resources covered by contracts part time. If a worker has worked on F1 for even just 10% of his working hours, his salary will be included in the budget cap at 100%. Red Bull has different branches – for example Red Bull Racing and Red Bull Advanced Technologies – and will certainly have to make corrections in view of the new regulatory cycle to ensure that they do not incur another violation of the expense ceiling as happened in 2021 when the FIA established that the Milton Keynes team had committed a minor violation sanctioned with a 7 million dollar fine and a 10% reduction in the time available in the wind tunnel and in the CFD simulation in the 2023 season.
