A winemaker in Austria made a sensational discovery by chance. He actually wanted to renovate the floor in the basement.
Gobelsburg – Dark secrets sometimes lie dormant in dark cellars. During renovation work in an old wine cellar, a winemaker in Austria came across a large old bone. He informed the Federal Monuments Office. But then the Austrian Archaeological Institute (ÖAI) got involved.
Secret from the Stone Age discovered in the wine cellar – winemaker finds mammoth bones
The floor in an old wine cellar should actually be leveled. But winemaker Andreas Pernerstofer discovered traces from the past. It quickly became clear that the large bone was a mammoth bone. Archaeologists arrived and examined the site in Lower Austria. Scientists are now talking about a “find of the century”.
A sensation is hidden beneath the cellar floor at a depth of 17 metres: a team of archaeologists discovered mammoth bones in several layers that are up to 40,000 years old and are said to come from at least three animals.
“The remains of two large mammoths and one small mammoth are probably in the Pernerstorf cellar,” the ÖAI said on Facebook. However, “Tusks have not been found yet.”
Mammoth bones in a wine cellar in Austria must be recovered with caution
The recovery of the old bones is difficult because they are very brittle. “We have to wrap them in wet newspaper and then plaster them so that they remain intact,” explains excavation manager Hannah Parow-Souchon, according to the Facebook post.
Traces from the Stone Age found in the cellar in the middle of Austria
Interestingly, pieces of charcoal were also found in the layers, which suggests that “stone age people were present there – in whatever role.” However, more precise data will only be available once the laboratory analyzes have been completed. This is what researchers estimate Age of a mammoth tusk from a US mine up to 100,000 years old.
“This spectacular find is unique in Austria in the last 100 years,” says the town of Langenlois, drawing parallels to the “Venus of Willendorf.” This Venus figurine, which is around eleven centimeters tall, was discovered in 1908 and is one of the most famous archaeological finds in Austria.
