The event organized by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) this Saturday, the 7th, on Avenida Paulista, was attended by 45 thousand people, according to estimates from the Monitor of Political Debate in the Digital Environment, at the University of São Paulo (USP). The demonstration that called for the impeachment of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes mobilized only a quarter of the public present at the last pro-Bolsonaro event, held on February 25, when 185 thousand supporters of the former president attended one of the postcards of the capital of São Paulo.
The institution’s audience estimates were measured based on the peak time of the demonstration, at 4:05 pm, when Bolsonaro was speaking on the float alongside the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos), federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL) and the organizer of the event, pastor Silas Malafaia.
The tone of the demonstration was the same as that of the event that took place earlier this year, when a crowd went to Paulista Avenue to show support for the former president who claimed to be “persecuted” by the Supreme Federal Court. However, without Bolsonaro’s ban on the use of banners and posters against the institutions – which occurred in February – the event had a harsher tone. Bolsonaro and his allies in the trio at the event also made stronger statements against the minister and also against the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).
Bolsonaro accused Moraes of being biased and called the minister a dictator
In an emotional speech, the former president recalled the stabbing he suffered in 2018 and defended, once again, the never-proven theory that his victory in that year’s election was the result of a “failure in the electoral system.” Bolsonaro also attacked Minister Alexandre de Moraes, accusing him of conducting the 2022 elections in a “biased” manner and of “choosing his targets.” “To prevent me from having a chance to return, they declared me ineligible,” said the former president.
The event was also attended by Bolsonaro allies such as Tarcísio de Freitas, who called for amnesty for those arrested for the coup acts of January 8. Other Bolsonaro supporters also participated in the demonstration and called for everything from Moraes’ impeachment to the minister’s arrest.
How was the estimate measured?
The USP monitor took 72 photos between 2:25 p.m. and 4:05 p.m. to arrive at this number. Eighteen photos were selected to cover the entire length of the demonstration without overlapping. Each photo was divided into 8 parts. In each part, an implementation of the Point to Point Network (P2PNet) method was applied, which identifies heads and estimates the number of people in an image.
The method has a precision of 72.9% and an accuracy of 69.5% in identifying each individual. In crowd counting, the average absolute percentage error is 12%, either way, for aerial images with more than 500 people.
