BRASILIA (Reuters) – A day after being framed for 10 crimes in Covid’s CPI report, President Jair Bolsonaro went on the attack against senator Renan Calheiros, the commission’s rapporteur.
“Don’t call Renan Calheiros a bum, a bum is a compliment for him,” Bolsonaro said when the audience at the event in Sergipe began to curse the senator.
“Why am I attacked 24 hours a day? Where did I go wrong?
CPI report headed by Renan Calheiros?” said Bolsonaro when the audience reacted.
The report frames the president in 10 crimes, including charges of crimes against humanity, quackery -for defending the use of drugs ineffective against Covid-19- against public health, epidemic followed by death and malfeasance, for having been informed about the risk of corruption in the purchase of the Indian Covaxin vaccine and not having requested investigation.
“There is no maracutaia in Brasília that the name of Renan Calheiros is not involved”, he attacked.
Bolsonaro also recalled that Renan ran for the presidency of the Senate in 2019 and lost to Davi Alcolumbre (DEM-AP), and stated that the country would be “a disgrace” with the senator at the head of the House.
After days of conflict with Alcolumbre, Bolsonaro took the opportunity to praise the senator, who is president of the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) and responsible for holding up to now the nomination of André Mendonça for a vacancy in the Federal Supreme Court.
“I had no problems with Davi Alcolumbre and I am grateful for the two years he was at the head of the Senate”, he said.
Even being indicted by the CPI, Bolsonaro maintained the same speech about Covid. In his speech, he again defended the use of ineffective medications and criticized the requirement for a vaccination passport that some States are implementing.
“Why this persecution (to chloroquine)? Why not give the doctor at the end of the line a chance? I took hydroxychloroquine, the next day it was fine. Is it because it’s cheap? Would it be another 3, 4, 5, 10 thousand reais the box would have a problem?”, he said, after asking who in the audience had taken the drug, which has proven to have no effect against Covid-19.
