BRASILIA (Reuters) – President Jair Bolsonaro arrived at the Ministry of Economy this Friday afternoon for a conversation with the head of the ministry, Paulo Guedes, amid rumors that the minister would be resigning.
Ministry sources, however, told Reuters earlier that Guedes did not resign from the post.
Rumors surrounding the minister’s departure stirred asset prices this morning, driving the rise of the dollar and the fall of the stock market.
Earlier, Guedes canceled his participation in an event organized by the Brazilian Supermarket Association (Abras) this Friday, according to the organisation’s press office – which helped fuel the rumors.
On Thursday, the Special Secretary of the Treasury and Budget, Bruno Funchal, and the Secretary of the National Treasury, Jeferson Bittencourt, as well as their deputies, forwarded their requests for removal from office.
The departure of Guedes’ aides came after the government’s negotiations with Congress for changes in the spending ceiling rule to put in place a new, more robust Bolsa Família.
