Bodybuilding (22% with 272 cases), athletics (18% with 227 cases), cycling (14% with 179 cases) and weightlifting (13% with 160 cases) are the four sports that topped the list of adverse results in the 2019 doping tests, the last year for which the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has completed its statistics.
The list of the ten most non-compliant sports is completed, according to the data published by WADA relating only to athletes, not their environment, powerlifting (119 cases), soccer (82), rugby (72), wrestling (55), swimming (50) and boxing (38).
Russia, Italy, India and Brazil, in the lead
In Russia, 167 cases were found, 19% of the total; Italy, 157 (18%); India, 152 (17%); Brazil, 78 (9%) and Iran, 70 (8%). Data from France and the United States follow, with 62 cases (7%), Kazakhstan with 49 (6%), Poland with 47 (5%) and Ukraine with 46 (5%).
The year 2019, in short
In 2019 anti-doping organizations took 278,047 samples, 1% of which, 2,701 were positive; of these, only 1,535 resulted in penalties, 57%, and 546 (20%) are still pending resolution.
Among the 1,535 samples that resulted in sanction, 1,183 were for men and 352 for women; 1,195 in competition and 340 out of competition; and 1,525 in urine and 10 in blood. There were athletes of 115 nationalities and 83 disciplines.
377 adverse non-analytical results were also recorded. (non-appearance, manipulation, possession …), 351 of athletes of 47 nationalities and 26 of personnel from their environment from 13 countries.
Cycling leads in Spain
The Spanish anti-doping agency took 4,807 samples in 2019 and found 48 adverse results, 18 of which resulted in sanction.
Cycling, with 9 violations, athletics, with 6, and kickboxing, with 2, were the only sports with more than one violation.. Arm wrestling (pulse), motorsports, canoeing, handball, rowing, triathlon, waterskiing and weightlifting round out the roster with a single violation. Seven non-analytical adverse cases were also recorded in Spain, six of them in cycling and one in weightlifting.
No violations were found in blood samples, only in urine, or hardly in out-of-competition controls, only three. As in the rest of the countries, in Spain, especially men are doped, responsible for three out of four positives.
