A new battery assembly plant will be built in Thailand. The BMW Group laid the foundation stone of the new factory that will produce Gen-5 high-voltage batteries, with a ceremony attended by Milan Nedeljković, member of the production council, representatives of the Thai government and the German ambassador to Thailand Ernst Reichel. This step will serve to cover local needs for the creation of electric cars intended for the Thai market which will begin in 2025. The new plant will be built in the Rayong complex where the German brand has already been producing vehicles intended for local sales for several years.
BMW development in the region
“Local production of high-voltage batteries in Rayong is the next logical step in the continued electrification of our production network – said Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of Management for Production of BMW AG, during the inauguration ceremony – Once again, the “local by local” principle applies, supporting economic development, employment opportunities and knowledge transfer in Thailand and the ASEAN region.”
The new battery factory
The upcoming high-voltage battery assembly plant will have an area of 4,000 square meters and will be an important addition to the business activities of BMW Group Manufacturing Thailand. The new assembly line will convert imported battery cells into modules that will then be integrated into high-voltage batteries. The BMW Group has invested more than 1.6 billion baht (around 42 million euros) in the project. 1.4 billion baht (around 36 million euros) will be used to purchase cutting-edge machinery. artistic equipment and systems. In Thailand, BMW's activities already include the construction of high-voltage batteries, used mainly for PHEV models that have been assembled locally since 2019.
Investments and training
The Rayong plant produces around two dozen BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad models for the Thai market and various ASEAN markets. In 2023, production was over 12,000 cars and almost 11,000 motorcycles. Employees will undergo comprehensive training programs, which will be delivered across the global manufacturing network with the aim of improving the technical skills of local staff through knowledge transfer.
