Dynamic design, completely renewed range of engines, vastly improved chassis technology: these are just some of the strong points of the restyling of the third generation of BMW 1 Series. The German car manufacturer has announced that the new 1 Series will also be produced in the German BMW Group plant in Leipzig: the market launch is scheduled for October this yearwith a focus that in addition to Europe will also be dedicated to Japan, one of the top five markets for the model.
The new BMW 1 Series
In terms of dimensions, the external length of the new 1 Series has increased by 42 mm to 4,361 mm, while the wheelbase is 2,670 mm, the width is 1,800 mm and the height has increased by 25 mm to 1,459 mm. Design chapter: BMW front radiator grille presents an innovative structure with vertical and diagonal barswhile the standard LED headlights are characterized by eye-catching vertical elements for the daytime running lights and direction indicators.
Style elements of the restyling
Elsewhere, we find the BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line as standard which includes a graphic with the number 1 in the counterpart Hofmeister kink on the C-pillar, a long roof spoiler, side wind deflectors, vertical reflectors, a black diffuser-style insert and the two-part rear light clusters which extend to the side sections.
Interiors and technology
The interior of the new BMW 1 Series is completely leather-free as standard, and offers a modern, premium ambience with sporty accents and plenty of space for up to five occupants thanks also to newly developed seats. By folding down the rear seat backrests, the storage space under the tailgate can be increased from 380 liters to 1,200 litres. Speaking of technology, the fully digital display system includes a 10.25″ Information Display and a 10.7″ Control Display. Finally, as an alternative to the standard sports steering wheel, a redesigned M leather steering wheel is available, which is part of the M Sport package and is equipped with manual gear shift paddles.
Motor range
We close with the engine range. At the top of the model range is the BMW M135 xDrive, which is powered by a 221 kW/300 hp four-cylinder engine, is equipped as standard with the adaptive M chassis with sports steering and intelligent all-wheel drive and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Like this one, all the other engines available for the new BMW 1 Series are also part of the latest generation of modular power units from the BMW Group: the three-cylinder petrol of the new BMW 120 and the four-cylinder diesel of the new one BMW 120dfor example, are combined with both 48-volt mild hybrid technology and a 7-speed Steptronic gearbox with double clutch as standard.
Performance and performance
In terms of performance, with a maximum power of 125 kW/170 hp the new BMW 120 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds, while the new BMW 120d generates an output of 120 kW/163 hp and sprints from 0 to 100 km /h in 7.9 seconds. The new one completes the range BMW 118dalso powered by a four-cylinder diesel engine, which delivers 110 kW/150 hp and guarantees a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds.
