The head of US diplomacy, Antony Blinken, urged China on Tuesday (14) to cease its “aggressive actions” in the Indo-Pacific region, during a visit to Southeast Asia.
In a speech at the University of Indonesia, Blinken said Washington will work with its allies to “defend a rule-based order.”
“That is why there is so much concern, from Northeast Asia to Southeast Asia and from the Mekong River to the Pacific Islands, for the aggressive actions of Beijing,” he said.
“Claim open seas as their own. Distort open markets by subsidizing their state-owned companies. Denying or revoking trade agreements with countries with which it has disagreements”, enumerated the secretary of state in reference to the Chinese actions.
Blinken said that “countries in the region want this behavior to change and so do we.”
“We are determined to guarantee freedom of navigation in the South China Sea, where aggressive acts by Beijing threaten trade worth $3 billion annually,” he added.
Beijing claims most of the South China Sea as its own, a region rich in resources and an important trade route.
