Biofuel for commercial flights: Eni-Sea agreement
Eni and SEA, the management company of the Milan Malpensa and Milan Linate airports, have signed an agreement to promote decarbonisation initiatives in the aviation sector and accelerate the ecological transition process of the two airports.
Eni-Sea: the details of the agreement
The agreement extends the collaboration launched in December 2021 for the refueling of private flights with biofuels (SAF) for use also for commercial flights, as well as for the supply of pure HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) hydrogenated biofuel for the handling of vehicles. land and a joint development program of smart mobility services. Products and services suitable for supporting both the reduction of emissions related to airport operations (scope 1 and 2) and the decarbonisation of air and land transport at airports (scope 3).
Eni is the second largest producer of HVO biofuels in Europe
Eni is the second largest producer of HVO biofuels in Europe, thanks to the proprietary Ecofining ™ technology, which also makes it possible to produce sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) from raw materials of vegetable origin and waste. Eni’s new “net zero carbon to 2050” strategy will make it possible to supply a variety of fully decarbonised products, combining environmental and financial sustainability.
Carrara (Eni): “Producing over 200 thousand tons per year”
“With this initiative – he comments Umberto Carrara, Eni’s Green / Traditional Refining and Marketing Director – Eni further develops the potential of sustainable biofuels for aviation, which at the moment are the only immediately available solution to decarbonise the sector. Eni has started the production of SAF a few months ago with a minimum share of used cooking oils, but plans to develop Eni Biojet shortly, exclusively from waste materials such as UCO or animal fats, which can be used in blends with jet conventional up to 50%. The goal is to produce over 200,000 tons / year by 2024 and at least 500,000 by 2030 “.
Brunini (Sea): “Accelerate on environmental sustainability”
“SEA looks to the future with the awareness that the restart of the airport sector passes from an acceleration on environmental sustainability – he says Armando Brunini, SEA CEO – Despite the crisis, all operators in the sector are investing in technologies and projects that make this transition faster. I am convinced that our sector must lead the ecological transition and in the face of concrete and measurable results it can deserve a support and incentive policy framework. Sea is working on several fronts and the agreement with Eni is particularly effective because it allows the implementation of projects whose positive effects will be visible. “
Sea and the Net Zero goal
This agreement will support SEA in achieving the “NET Zero” objective, ie the zeroing of its net emissions (scope 1,2 and 3), by 2030, 20 years ahead of most international commitments. Furthermore, it will allow the airport operator to develop increasingly sustainable and innovative actions for maintaining the highest level (“ACA 4+ Transition”) of the Airport Carbon Accreditation program of the ACI Europe airport association reached by the Milan Linate and Milan Malpensa airports. .
