Politico: Bident will give Kenya major non-NATO partner status
US President Joe Biden will grant Kenya major non-NATO partner status during a state visit by African leader William Samoa Ruto. This is reported by Politico citing two American officials.
The largely symbolic move comes just before Kenya sends 1,000 police officers to quell gang violence in Haiti, the newspaper notes.
Kenya will be the first sub-Saharan country to receive this title. It will allow it to receive more modern weapons from the United States and engage in closer security cooperation.
“If any country in Africa which does not already have this status has a prima facie [на первый взгляд] reason to be designated as a major non-NATO ally is Kenya,” said J. Peter Pham, a former senior African official in former US President Donald Trump’s administration.
It is clarified that the growing ties between Washington and Nairobi occur against the backdrop of the Biden administration’s concerns about China’s growing influence on the African continent, as well as Russia’s ties with Kenya.
Previously, Biden opposed the unilateral recognition of Palestine by other countries. The American leader sees a solution to the Palestinian issue only in a bilateral manner.
