Biden affirms that “the American people deserve a peaceful transition” after Trump’s victory

The still president of the United States, Joe Biden, declared this Thursday that “the people of the United States deserve a peaceful transition” of power, after Donald Trump won Tuesday’s elections against the Democratic candidate and current vice president, Kamala Harris.

Biden stated in a brief speech at the White House that yesterday, Wednesday, he spoke with Trump to congratulate him on his victory and guarantee that “peaceful transition,” and that he has instructed his administration to work to ensure that the transition is like that.

The president appeared the day after Kamala Harris did so to accept defeat from Howard University in Washington. More than 100 days after Biden resigned from the candidacy amid internal pressure from his party, the president recalled yesterday in a statement that choosing Harris was “the best decision” he made when he withdrew from the presidential race. The phrase is the same statement that he already made in Chicago when he passed the testimony to his vice president.

Now, the Democrats can only lick their wounds and analyze the causes of the debacle. Trump has not only swept the presidential election, but the Republicans have managed to take control of the Senate and are on their way to also taking control of the House of Representatives. In her speech on Wednesday, Harris tried to point to the future without regrets and without losing hope, aware of the dark times that lie ahead, but also knowing that within the party accusatory fingers will begin to rise in search of those responsible for the electoral failure.

One of the first to be pointed out has been Biden, who is criticized for having wanted to hold on to the candidacy for too long, giving a very narrow margin to build a more solid alternative. One of Harris’s burdens has been her lack of definition, according to critics. After the debate against Trump, despite emerging victorious and managing to corner her adversary, many of the voters who saw them face to face continued with the same feeling: that they did not know Harris enough.

Although this lack of definition of Harris, rather than being attributed to the times, may also be a consequence of the attempt to present an attractive candidacy for conservative voters. “I am Kamala Harris, my pronoun is ‘she’, I am a woman,” she said in a round table organized at the White House in 2022. Two years later, in the middle of the presidential race, Harris had set aside these positions to say that she is owner of a Glock and that the United States would have “the most lethal Army in the world” if she were president.

In a statement, Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders put it this way: “We should not be too surprised that a Democratic Party that has abandoned the working class discovers that the working class has abandoned it. As Democratic leaders defend status quothe American people are angry and want change.”

Another element on which the party has to reflect is the divided vote. Trump has won in Arizona, but Proposition 139 has also won to defend abortion rights, and Democratic Senator Rubén Gallego is on his way to defeating Republican Kari Lake, who has dedicated herself to imitating Trump’s rhetoric. The same thing has happened in North Carolina: Trump won, but in the race for governor the Democratic candidate Josh Stein won.
