A week ago 2023 ended in light and dark for the Italian car market. With the unknown of the incentives and registrations with two faces, with 1,566,448 cars delivered in the year just ended which is equivalent to a growth of 19% compared to 2022 but which still reflects a clear decline if the data is compared with 2019 ( the now known pre-covid era) when there were 350,000 more units sold and therefore a decrease in 2023 if compared to that period of -18.3%. But what were the best-selling cars in Italy in 2023? Let's analyze the ranking of the 10 cars that dominated registrations.
Fiat Panda always dominates the market
The queen of the Italian market remains the Fiat Panda, which remains the best-selling car ever in 2023. The city car of the Italian brand closed the past year with 102,625 units registered. Of these 93,861 cars were hybrids, a figure which allowed the Panda to also be the best-selling full hybrid in Italy in 2023. At this point there is a lot of curiosity around the historic model of the Italian brand which has turned 40 and which in 2024 it will have a new generation that is completely different from the past. It will also be the first electric version and could be placed in a higher segment, with a real revolution for Panda.
Dacia Sandero ahead of Lancia Ypsilon
Behind the best seller Fiat in the overall ranking was the Dacia Sandero, which closed the year with 48,398 cars delivered. Sales of the compact car from Renault's Romanian brand were driven by LPG, with 33,328 cars registered with bi-fuel power. The Lancia Ypsilon came in third place, with 44,891 units. The city of the Turin brand resists strenuously, finishing in second place among hybrids just behind Panda, with 39,838 sales. The ranking then continues with Toyota Yaris Cross which closed 2023 with 34,981 deliveries.
The other best-selling cars in Italy
In fifth place in the ranking of the best-selling cars in Italy is the Fiat 500. The other best seller of the Italian brand ended the year with 32,981 cars registered, 27,099 hybrids and 4,749 electric. The Cinquino on tap has in fact lost the scepter of best-selling EV in Italy, conquered by Tesla with Model Y and Model 3 in the first two places. Next we find the Volkswagen T-Roc which closed 2023 with 32,969 units sold while the Renault Captur sold 31,128 and the Citroen C3 sold 31,059. Closing out the top 10 of the best-selling cars in Italy are the Ford Puma (30,804) and Dacia Duster (30,155).
