Former Pope Benedict XVI, a German theologian who shocked the world in 2013 by resigning to lead a Church rocked by intrigue and scandal, has died on Saturday at the age of 95, the Vatican announced.
“It is with regret that I announce that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI passed away today at 9:34 am (local time), in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery of the Vatican,” said the director of the Holy See’s press service, Matteo Bruni.

A book against ‘slander’
The personal secretary of the emeritus pope, Monsignor Georg Gänswein, will publish a book in January with his memoirs and to confront the “slander” that some reproach him for.
The book will be titled Nothing but the truth. My life with Benedict XVI. “These pages contain personal testimony to the greatness of a calm man. They are a narrative that seeks to shed light on misunderstood aspects of his pontificate and describe the ‘Vatican world’ from the inside,” Ganswein said.
