The helmsman and leader of INEOS Britannia, Sir Ben Ainslie, explained that in his team’s first two victories in the final against Emirates Team New Zealand it has been key to “maintain the advantage” that he has achieved in the two outings and that has allowed us to close the gap in the final (4-2).
“It was a difficult day for us, but we knew we could win. Doing it in the first race gave us encouragement, and I think that in the second, although the conditions were not the best for us, we knew how to manage ourselves and respond well to their attacks,” stated the four-time Olympic champion and world champion.
“We all know that the Kiwis are a great team and yesterday we prepared intensely so that today we could, at least, respond to their great competitiveness. Now another final begins for us,” he added.
Regarding the fact that Team New Zealand’s speed had until now been higher upwind (against the wind) and that was not the case today, Ainslie revealed that, during the rest day on Tuesday, they were “working on finding out” where they were. “failing” and, apparently, this Wednesday, it is clear that they have “detected” it.
For his part, Emirates Team New Zealand helmsman Nathan Outteridge has recognized the British superiority: “In the first race, it was a mistake when taking the position, and we lost the ‘flight’. In the second start today we were not good either, and we were unable to neutralize the initial advantage they gained.”
“The truth is that they were really fast today, but it is clear that making a mistake against them is not forgiving. Be that as it may, we are calm. It is true that they trained hard yesterday, we saw them and we expected this great reaction. There is still a lot left, and today has been a warning,” concluded the Olympic champion and four-time world champion.
