The greatest coach ever has had his day, it’s time for the Pats to move on. Buffalo is preferred to Kansas City, but the sprint is wide open
@maximors
Impossible not to open the analysis of the 15th day from Las Vegas. There’s a saying over there: “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” That is, the sins committed in the Sin City will not leave the city walls. The Patriots should hope that’s the case, because they hit rock bottom in the loss to the Raiders that left everyone speechless. Then we’ll also talk about the general mediocrity that permeates the league and the disasters of Dallas and Indianapolis. But, we said, Vegas…
folly

What went through Jakoby Meyers’ head we will never know. Maybe he thought the Pats were down and not even, would be the only logical explanation. But, beyond that reckless gesture that cost New England the game and most likely the playoffs, we witnessed a game between two teams that couldn’t be more modest. The impression is that in two years with this group the Pats haven’t built anything. Mac Jones has thrown off the mask: he is not the future’s qb. With the Raiders he played the worst game of his career. As former great Ted Johnson rightly pointed out on local TV, “You can’t be arrogant and inaccurate at the same time and he’s both.” He fails easy easy passes and gets angry with teammates and coaches. One of the many signs that the team is in disarray. And the reason is one: Bill Belichick. He’s the greatest coach in the history of the sport, not just the NFL probably, but he’s done his time. It’s time to change after 70 years. Commentators keep repeating “these aren’t Belichick team blunders” when they see the Patriots goofing off crap after crap. The problem is that today this is Belichick’s team. Eternal gratitude, but it’s time to move on and start from scratch. Bill’s biggest fault is not having assembled a coaching staff worthy of the name. You won’t see a single one of them find a place as head coach in the offseason and there will be a reason…
Dallas
—
The way Dallas lost to the Jags wasn’t bad either. A “pick six” in overtime with an increasingly disappointing Dak Prescott. He had tried to lose last week against Houston, this time he succeeded in Jacksonville. Honor to Trevor Lawrence who – having left injuries and Urban Meyer behind – is becoming the qb that the Jags thought they had chosen in the draft with the absolute number one. Now I’m even in the odor of the playoffs given the increasingly abrupt braking of the Titans. The Boys are waiting for Odell Beckham Jr. for the playoffs, where they will probably find Tampa in the first round (or whoever wins that unfortunate division for it). But the defense must go back to being the same as they were at the start of the season if they want to make progress.
the doubts
—
Last week we talked about the doubts even in the victories of the Bills, Chiefs and the aforementioned Cowboys. Partially confirmed this turn. KC almost lost in Houston, saving only thanks to a covered fumble in overtime. Buffalo won, with difficulty, not completely convincing – especially in defense – but with a Josh Allen like this they can even afford it. And given how the Chiefs are tearing up, we put them first in the AFC. Miami – for which we had made the same speech – lost head on. We’ll understand something more after the match against the Christmas Packers. The calendar is not impossible (they will have Pats away and Jets at home), the playoffs remain within reach.
playoff sprint
—
Buffalo, Kansas City (arithmetically), Cincinnati and Baltimore are safe in the AFC (which will come in reverse, but with 9 victories it shouldn’t shake even given the calendar, at home with Atlanta and Pittsburgh, the last one in Cincinnati). Even Miami should do it. Then the winner of the South (Tennessee or Jacksonville) and the Chargers who are preferred to the Jets and Pats finding Indy, Rams and Broncos from here to the end.
In the Nfc, Eagles, Niners, Vikings and Cowboys are already inside. Someone has to win the South (let’s say Tampa despite everything). Then Giants who probably just need a win from here to the end. And the last square is played by Washington (49ers, Browns and Cowboys in the last three), Seattle (swooping and the next one will be at the home of the Chiefs, then the Jets and Rams) and Detroit (on the rise). Let’s say Lions who seem to be the most on the ball and will challenge Carolina, Chicago and Green Bay. Speaking of Washington: the refereeing against the Giants was bad and they were practically out of the way. Someone ironically pointed out that it almost seemed that the owner (Sndyer) was under investigation by the NFL…
Brady
—
Two interceptions and two fumbles on four drives in the second half. Up 17-0, down 34-17. Ok, the team is funny, but he is certainly not the good old days. Let’s wait until we give it up, he has denied us a thousand other times and we would like to see him in other situations with another team. Remember senior year at the Pats? Go watch the games again, they were almost the same as the current season with the Bucs. The following year he won the Super Bowl. Ok, the years go by and it’s 45. But we find it hard to believe that he can leave after a similar championship.
mediocrity
—
There was talk of the level of the game. Almost all insiders, coaches in the first place, point the finger at the few workouts that take place in the offseason. By now – in addition to the increasingly limited number – it is almost impossible to make one in which you put on a helmet and protections to simulate real game situations. Ok, player safety comes first, but this is ruining the game.
The Super Bowl of the week
—
The Eagles, struggling a bit with Chicago, but with Jalen Hurts who now has the mvp in his pocket, remain the favorites in the NFC. Chiefs who after two so-so games, are instead overtaken by the Bills. At the moment. The margin is very thin. The bye is important, if not fundamental: they are even but the direct clash favors Buffalo. In the last three the Bills will challenge outside Chicago and Cincy and at home the Pats, Kansas City instead at home Seattle, Denver and Las Vegas. Overtaking is still possible.
