Oleg Gaidukevich, deputy chairman of the Belarusian parliamentary commission on international affairs, on Wednesday, November 24, in an interview with Izvestia, assessed the beginning of the Ukrainian special operation Polesie on the border with the republic.
“There has never been any threat from Belarus to Ukraine. And attempts to find, as always, a threat in Belarus is an attempt to provoke a conflict, on the one hand, and, on the other, to find those responsible for the problems that Ukrainian society and government are currently experiencing. We, among other things, were a platform for resolving the situation in Ukraine itself. And we stay for her. And we will not succumb to any provocations, this rhetoric is ridiculous. The easiest way to find enemies is, ”he said.
At the same time, Gaidukevich positively assessed the fact of Kiev’s strengthening of the border, since all the problems, according to him, come from the Ukrainian side, for example, illegal arms trafficking and crime.
“We have fortified our border long ago so that all this does not go to the Union State. Let them take care of their country and put things in order there, we do not mind. And let them fight against crime and banditry, too, ”he concluded.
The beginning of the special operation of Ukraine on the border with Belarus became known earlier that day. It was indicated that the operation is coordinated by the border service and is being carried out jointly with the forces of the National Guard, the National Police, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and other involved reserves.
According to the first deputy chairman of the State Border Service Volodymyr Nikiforenko, the threat of the spread of the migration crisis and the likelihood of redirecting migrant flows to Ukraine remains on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border. In this regard, the law enforcement agencies jointly began to take measures to build up the border protection system in this area.
It was also noted that aviation, unmanned aerial systems, as well as technical surveillance equipment will be used for patrolling and monitoring.
On November 19, the National Guard of Ukraine began exercises in the Chernigov region at the Novye Yarilovichi checkpoint, which is located 800 meters from the border with Belarus. The day before, the Verkhovna Rada adopted in the second reading a bill that allows border guards to use weapons and military equipment to prevent conflicts and provocations. A total of 271 MPs voted in favor of the draft law.
On November 12, the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Denis Monastyrsky announced that the country would strengthen the border with Belarus with units of military personnel and police officers. He said that the Ministry of Internal Affairs aviation will also operate at the border – 15 helicopters. It was also noted that the additional forces would be based “on the directions of potential movement of illegal migrants” from neighboring Belarus.
