Beijing has begun offering its residents booster doses of Covid-19 vaccine in order to increase security for the Winter Olympics, which will be played in February, local media announced on Wednesday.
According to the government newspaper “Beijing News”, the doses will be intended for residents of the Chinese capital over 18 years old and who have been fully immunized for at least six months.
One billion people (more than 78% of the population) were fully vaccinated in China by mid-September, according to the National Health Commission, but there are doubts surrounding the effectiveness of formulas made in China against the delta variant of the new coronavirus.
Chinese health experts believe that the country needs vaccination coverage of 85% of the population to achieve herd immunity, a goal that authorities want to reach by the end of the year.
At least 10 Chinese provinces have announced booster shots in recent weeks, which include cities in Fujian province and the Xinjiang region, where local outbreaks were detected last month.
