Before DANA, a Mazón councilor ordered his workers to take shelter in “safe facilities”

It was not just the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Industry or the Provincial Council of Valencia or the University. The Department of Environment, Infrastructure and Territory, headed by Vicente Martínez Mus, called off a meeting with union representatives scheduled for the following day, the day of the catastrophic DANA, on October 28. On the same morning of October 29, it also alerted its environmental agents in the regions with weather alerts to stay in their offices or in other safe places due to the danger that could be coming. This is stated by CGT, a libertarian union that reported Mazón to the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Valencia for an alleged crime against workers’ rights. The regional department, for its part, has not answered elDiario.es’ questions.

CGT assures that the general director of the Natural and Animal Environment, Luis Gomis, called off a meeting with union representatives scheduled for October 29 to avoid traveling by road. He did so, according to the union, at 4:00 p.m. on October 28.

On the other hand, the general directorate of Forest Fire Prevention, headed by Civil Guard captain Rosa Touris, also gave instructions to the staff of the Preventive Surveillance Plan of the public company VAERSA not to go out into the field on the 29th, 30th. and October 31.

In addition, general director Luis Gomis instructed environmental agents in areas declared with orange or red pre-emergency not to go outdoors. The internal note was signed at 11:30 on October 29, while President Carlos Mazón continued with his agenda of events unrelated to DANA.

The document, to which elDiario.es has had access, explained: “In those areas where pre-emergency color orange or higher has been established, the agents on duty will not carry out their work in the natural environment, that is, if the conditions If they allow it, they will arrive at the demarcation office, otherwise they will carry out their work in secure facilities (park offices, town halls, homes) and will notify the head of the region of the location of each agent. Travel will be on roads and priority will be given to personal security and assistance work for City Councils, self-training and report writing.”

The Valencian Security and Emergency Response Agency had already decreed a red level alert – extreme risk – for rains and storms on the southern coast of Valencia, and a level 1 emergency situation in the Ribera Alta region.

The preventive reaction of the Department of Environment, Infrastructure and Territory on the day of the catastrophic DANA, and even the day before, was not the only one on the part of the Valencian Executive.

The Ministry of Finance suspended a destination election ceremony for civil servants in a circular on Monday the 28th at 12:10 p.m. The then Minister of Industry Nuria Montes also suspended an event with the employers’ association in Valencia on October 29 at 5:00 p.m., as confirmed by sources from the regional department to this newspaper. The University of Valencia had suspended classes the day before, a decision criticized by Mazón a few hours before the DANA.

And the Provincial Council of Valencia sent its workers home on the same day as DANA at 2:00 p.m. Shortly after that time, the carefree president Mazón left the Palau de la Generalitat to attend a controversial lunch with the journalist Maribel Vilaplana that lasted until after 6:00 p.m. Carlos Mazón arrived at the L’Eliana Emergency Coordination Center around 7:30 p.m. The massive mobile alert was sent at 8:11 p.m., when hundreds of citizens were already trapped.
