Technology allows you to live a beautiful, dignified, courageous and stimulating life even in situations of severe disability. This was witnessed by Bebe Vio and Emanuele Lambertini, Paralympic athletes with a very long curriculum of victories and medals in fencing. Bebe and Emanuele brought to the audience of the 24th Conference of the Italian Association of Clinical Engineers (Aiic), underway in Rome, a contagious experience of vitality and courage, also describing the aims and activities of the Art4Sport foundation, which has as its objective that of introducing children and young people with disabilities towards sport as a physical and psychological recovery therapy.
“Many young and old Italians – recalled the two Paralympic champions – are waiting for the update of the Tariff Nomenclature which establishes the methods of supply of aids and prostheses for disabled people paid by the National Health Service. This means that thousands of people who they need prostheses, wheelchairs and walkers to be able to live a better life. They do not have free access to the best and most advanced solutions, but only to basic, simple models and often of a particularly old and outdated design continued Bebe and Emanuele – and on which we wish to involve the Association of Clinical Engineers is simple: let’s all move together so that the institutions proceed quickly with the renewal of the nomenclature to ensure through the NHS to thousands and thousands of Italians a daily life of dignity and dignity” .
During their speech, the two athletes – who recounted their personal experience of “cohabiting” with technologies – also launched an invitation to clinical engineers, especially those working in the field of prosthetic design: “Always try to think and plan by putting yourself in the shoes of the young people who will use prosthetics and ask yourself: how can we help these people with disabilities live the life they want to live?”.
Speaking at the end of the session, Umberto Nocco, president of Aiic and Lorenzo Leogrande, president of the conference, confirmed that the Association will undertake to convey the two messages – attention to the planning phase and renewal of the tariff nomenclature – to its members and at the top of the Ministry of Health. A message at least in part already collected by Americo Cicchetti, general director of programming at the Ministry of Health, who is directly involved in the management of the LEAs (essential levels of assistance) who, present in the room, took charge of the request regarding the renewal of the nomenclator.
