Bathco BM Torrelavega fell clearly against HC Vojvodina (26 – 33) in a match marked by toughness. HC Vojvodina was superior for practically the entire match, where the referees and the federation delegate were more protagonists than expected. The 40×20 ended up sentencing an orange team that is already focusing its efforts on the ASOBAL League.
The match began with a loss by Vorkapic that ignited a fiery Vicente Trueba even more. Álex Rubiño could not convert the first good orange circulation into a goal. It would take more than 4 minutes for the scoring to open, at which point Jakub Prokop broke his lead and beat Trnavac. Vukovkljak followed suit seconds later, almost making it seem like they were waiting to break the ice.
Milan Jovanovic received in the back defense 2 minutes. The superiority facilitated the penetration for Nicolai Colunga’s goal. Vorkapic tied at 2 as a result of an unquestionable circulation. Trnavac thwarted Linhares’ quick response. Before the exclusion expired, the Brazilian redeemed himself, tying Vorkapic’s previous goal. Pukhouski and Nikolic combined for a sensational ‘fly’ that made it 3 – 4.
THE BATHCO STUCK IN ATTACK
An inspired Trnavac served to give his team a +2 ball. Marcio Silva neutralized it with a recovery from a chipped pass. The game went crazy for a minute in which Ahmed Hussein ended up putting his mind at ease with the score at 3 – 5. The 10th minute of the game had passed and Bathco BM Torrelavega seemed stuck in attack.
The good defensive situation was aborted by the exclusion of Ángel Fernández for protesting. Vorkapic took advantage of the gap to make it 3 – 6. The orange drought lasted throughout the inferiority, with Predovic widening the gap. At the edge of the 15th minute, Jacobo Cuétara called the first timeout of the game. After the break, a loss by Colunga did not alleviate the pain.
Branko Predovic was left alone in the pivot to increase to 5. Moments later, Predovic himself went to the bench for 2 minutes for trying to take Ángel Fernández home. Inferiority was no solution for the oranges either, as Cangiani’s great feint ended in a saving arm from Trnavac. Both teams exchanged errors as Nikolic and Muñoz alternated goals. It was the 17th when the Madrid native resumed his scoring pace.
Pukhouski’s 4 – 10 and a ball over the top from Cangiani stung Vicente Trueba who believed again after a robbery by Colunga with a goal from Ángel Fernández. However, the day was not looking ahead for Bathco BM Torrelavega and two consecutive losses ended HC Vojvodina’s +6. The Serbs began to like each other and Cuétara, desperate, consumed another timeout in the 22nd minute.
THE SUPPORT OF THE FANS
The Asturian’s gesture was the same as that of the entire pavilion, although the return to play meant the return of applause. The faith of the Orange Tide translated into a save by Abraham González and a goal by Javi Muñoz to make it 6 – 12. The Serbs, with the first 7 meters of the game, struck again. From the end, Ángel Fernández confirmed the orange improvement. HC Vojvodina’s mistaken attack, given the confusion in the pavilion, was rescued by the table, alleging a time-out by Boris Rojevic that did not sound at the buzzer.
After the game was stopped for several minutes, Predovic scored to the disbelief of a fan who didn’t know where to go. After a new penalty, Ángel Fernández received another exclusion for protesting, which ended up driving the respectable player into despair. Meanwhile, Vorkapic made it 7 – 15. Linhares transformed the last orange attack and, at the horn, Dodic replaced the +8 with which the game went to the locker room.
Hope is what is lost last and Torrelavega was willing to prove it. The step forward for Jacobo Cuétara’s team was seen in the initial 5 minutes, cutting it to 6 and forcing an exclusion from Vorkapic. Towards the 40th minute was when the Serbian team got into tune again, whose disconnection did not last very long.
At 14 – 20, after an exclusion on each side, Juanjo Fernández received another 2 minutes that left the oranges 1 minute long with 5 men. Despite this, Vorkapic’s high penalty and a goal from Muñoz restored faith. Faced with the orange reaction, Rajocevic stopped the clock for the second time. There were still 20 minutes left to play when, after the break, Vorkapic remade the +6.
Carlos Gómez forced a penalty that Ángel scored. Although the advantage was great, Bathco BM Torrelavega was still alive in the match, especially considering the first leg. After another penalty, Milan Pusica was excluded, although Trnavac denied Ángel the goal. HC Vojvodina failed its attack in inferiority, but the oranges failed twice. The Serbs received another exclusion that was also ineffective, a sign of local bad luck, after a slip by Javi Muñoz.
LAST MINUTES
At 16 – 23 we entered the last quarter of an hour. Two orange goals in two minutes reduced the difference, taking advantage of the fact that the referees began to punish the Serbian toughness. Along with this, the increasing protests of visitors continued to earn them exclusions. The chances of a comeback were there and they took a step forward in defense of Bathco BM Torrelavega.
Precisely during the duration of one of those exclusions, HC Vojvodina regained the lead of 8. With 21 – 29 and 9 minutes left, Jacobo Cuétara called his last timeout. The Asturian’s 7:6 also had no effect. After that, two more hits from Hussein and Predovic left the entire pavilion, players and fans without strength. The +10 in the light was an incontestable slab facing the last 7 minutes of the game.
The final minutes passed in a mixture of Trueba’s gratitude to his warriors and resignation at the spectacle witnessed. The final horn in Torrelavega sounded with 26 – 33 in the light and a thunderous ovation from the almost 2,000 people who enjoyed handball on a Tuesday night. Another night, Sunday, will witness the next battle of the Orange Squadron, against Rebi Cuenca at 8:30 p.m.
