From fright to the front row
Oscar Piastri he confirmed himself in second position after the second time in Q3 on Saturday in Imola, but this time no impediment deprived the Australian of the front row alongside the host Charles Leclerc. The McLarens once again responded to the flying lap test, confirming the quality of the MCL38 project which is continuing to grow.
Lando Norris he achieved the fourth fastest time to complete the Ferrari-McLaren alternation in the first two rows of the starting grid, but the English driver broke out in a cold sweat in Q1 when an advertising banner stuck on the bottom of his car caused him to lose performance by up to three seconds (Leclerc had collected another on the front wing).
“It is not acceptable that incidents like this occur – he has declared Andrea Stellateam principal of McLaren – we risked elimination in Q1 with Lando Norris because he lost load points by up to three seconds. The team was very cold and clear in reacting to this unexpected event. The performances surprised us in a positive way, as far as tomorrow’s strategy is concerned, the tires could be more of an unknown than you think.”
