Bandai Namco revealed that he had canceled “at least 5 games” not yet announced and which were in development at the company's studios.
This information comes from a Q&A attached to the latest shareholder report, in which he added that the company is now adopting an even stricter protocol to monitor the quality of projects in the pipeline and to approve new projects.
“We have decided to dispose of work in progress in accordance with our internal rules regarding product evaluation in progress,” the company said. “We also decided to discontinue development on at least five other titles in development and recorded a loss on the termination of these titles.”
“Additionally, since the second half of the previous fiscal year we have changed our development structure, establishing more stringent criteria for proceeding with development, narrowing the number of titles and recording development costs.”
“In addition to narrowing the number of titles, we are also working to optimize our portfolio by category, such as titles strategically distributed around the world and casual titles for users looking for lightweight experiences.”
Negative results in the last quarter
No further details have been added about the finished projects and we will probably never know exactly which games they were. In any case, it must be said that the cancellation of a title not yet announced, therefore in an embryonic stage of development, is not a rarity in the industry, although in this case we are talking about at least five interrupted productions.
During the meeting with shareholders, Bandai Namco also revealed that revenues in the fiscal third quarter fell 8.9% year-on-year and profits decreased by 96.5%. According to the company, this is partly due to the anomalous numbers of the last fiscal year recorded thanks to the enormous success of Elden Ring and those which on the contrary turned out to be below expectations for some recently launched titles, such as Blue Protocol. In return, Tekken 8 is proving to be a successso much so that over 2 million copies were sold within a few days of launch.
