One of the problems Larian Studios had with Baldur's Gate 3 was in the planning stage Starfield. According to an interview given to Gamesindustry.biz, Vincke and his colleagues feared the proximity of the Bethesda game and for this reason they anticipated the arrival of the PC version, delaying the console version. As you know, in the end Baldur's Gate 3 did much better than Bethesda's game, but before its release it was not possible to make any predictions on the matter, considering the resonance that the second one was having.
Not an equal comparison
“I have great respect for Bethesda… If you are at sea and a larger ship is approaching, the rule is to move out of the way to let it pass. They were the largest ship. We shied away, but we still wanted the world to pay attention to us.”
Vincke said he was aware that Baldur's Gate 3 and Starfield are two very different games, but the development team wanted to make sure the right aspects of the game were highlighted, distancing it from Starfield in players' minds.
The mission was definitely successful, considering that Baldur's Gate 3 was the game of the year for many publications, as well as for various international awards, the latest of which is the very recent BAFTA Awards. In any case, Vincke's speech is flawless, in a general sense and, in hindsight, Larian did very well to distance himself as much as possible from Starfield, so as to be able to showcase the strengths of his game, making him have everything the space it deserved.
