In a talk entitled “The Future of Media: World Building and Universe Expansion”, Joe Russo, one of the two directors of Avengers: Endgame spoke of the Metaverse and the world of gaming, defining it as the future of storytelling.
The talk allowed the director of Avengers: Endgame to speak with the Chief Creative Officer of Epic Games, Donald Mustardat the DICE Annual Summit:
I think the revolution comes from the video game because that’s where the technology is.
Expanding the discussion a little, Russo explains that the technology it is designed to advance it in gaming, something that doesn’t happen in classic films “because they can’t understand it”. So if there is to be a more powerful company in terms of storytelling, it will certainly be a video game development company.
It is not strange that Joe Russo finds himself against the world of cinema, thinking it not suitable for the future of storytelling: on the other hand, there are problems between superhero films, the so-called cinecomics, and cinema that defines itself as an author, and every day they populate the web with a multitude of affirmations.
It must be said, however, that Russo also stands against the metaverseexplaining that not even Facebook will be able to tell things in the way a video game does: actually the metaverse proposes a series of events and a very end in itself, extemporaneous storytelling, while the video game manages to tell plots that sometimes reach an exceptional quality.
Among the video games released for a few years and which have been talked about for the plot, there is to remember The Last of Us Part 2but also the most recent Horizon Forbidden Westtwo practical examples of how technology, combined with directorial style, make it possible to put on the screen – in an increasingly photorealistic quality – events and actions capable of thrilling and leaving millions of gamers in suspense.
