Australia beat Peru on penalties and will play the World Cup in Qatar. After the 0-0 tie in the 120 minutes, the Oceania managed to win the definition and got the next to last place in the competition.
It was a very weak match for Ricardo Gareca’s National Team and they paid dearly for it. There was a lot of fear of error, no great risks were taken and practically they had no scoring chances (only one stick from Edison Flores in overtime).
Australia knew how to handle the match against a rival that in the previous seemed to be superior and reached the penalties without suffering. There, the coach made a master move: He changed his goalkeeper and ended up giving him a great result.
Andrew Redmayne saved the last penalty of the night and managed to get Australia to qualify for the next World Cup. With his dances in anticipation of all the shots, he achieved the goal of being the hero of the day.
Those who failed in Peru were Luis Advincula and Alex Valera. Gareca’s men failed to meet their goal of qualifying for the second consecutive World Cup and their illusion ended. Australia will share a group with France, Denmark and Tunisia. A real shame for South American football!
