From the A1 to the Q8 e-tron, up to the new A5 and A6 models, everything is about to change. Audi too has chosen to change the names of its vehicles. This is a Revolution Of Audi in terms of names and models. The introduction of new electric vehicles in the price range of almost every manufacturer in the world raises an immeasurable question, namely what to name the different models. A good name can lead to a winning strategy, just as an unfortunate name can have repercussions on sales.
Audi, model revolution, clear distinction between electric and thermal cars with even and odd numbers
The purpose is to clarify and avoid confusion, as Q8 and Q8 e-tron which have the same name Q8, but the vehicles are totally different. Here are the changes planned for the year 2025.
To distinguish, in the best way, the electric cars from those with internal combustion engines, Audi has decided to assign new names to the carsin order to make them easily identifiable: the electric vehicles will have even numbers, while odd numbers will be assigned to endothermic cars. For example, next year, when the new A6 e-tron is launched, the current A6 will be called: A7. In this way the A6 (even number) will refer to the BEV. And again, the future A4 will be called A5 and so on until all the rest are created until two different typologies.
Even the acronyms will have their own identificatione. The Q acronym will establish the identity of Audi SUVs. R, S and RS are the acronyms reserved for sporty models. Then there will be the A models with a non-raised trim.
Audi, future changes on model names, cars out of production
Having specified the various upheavals that Audi will bring in 2025, here is what will become of its current vehicles.
Audi odd numbers:
- Audi A1: is about to end its life cycle – also because there have been no denials regarding this discretion -. It is the smallest of the series.
- Audi A3: having an odd number, the name will not change. However, this does not mean that the Audi A3 will not be updated in the coming years. But on A3 only thermal and hybrid engines.
- Audi A5: A4 generation born in 1994 which is about to end its life cycle. Sedans and station wagons will return to the market in the fall of 2024, but with the name A5 and heat engines while with the name Only electric cars will be called “A4”. The Audi RS4 is already out of the price list, but we will find it again on the “5”.
- Audi A7: From 2025, the A6 with internal combustion engine will be called “A7”. The Avant version of the sedan will be – according to rumors – a combination of the simple look of the Sportback and the classic look of the sedan.
- Audi Q3: perhaps the company’s last new vehicle with an internal combustion engine. It will go on sale from late 2024 to early 2025, and will have a lot in common with the Volkswagen Tiguan (starting with the engine).
- Audi Q5: The new Q5 will be launched in autumn 2024. The relationship between the A5 and Q5 is clear.
- Audi Q7: it was launched in 2015, using the Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne platforms. The thermal Q8 should change its name and return to Sportback Q7.
Audi even numbers electric motors only:
- Audi A4: as mentioned above, it will be only electric, while the thermal ones will be A5 therefore it will no longer be a Sportback, coupé and cabrio but a station wagon, with diesel and petrol engines.
- Audi A6: The Audi A6 e-tron and S6 e-tron will be available to order from September 2024 as Sportback and Avant models. As the name suggests, these are electric cars in the E-class. Production of the A6 will be discontinued in 2025 at the earliest, so the “tron” suffix is important.
- Audi A8: As the name suggests, the new A8 is expected to be an electric car.
- Audi Q2: there are no plans for now. But given its success there is a possibility – perhaps – that it will come out in a new compact electric version, similar to the Skoda Epiq.
- Audi Q4 e-tron and its coupe variant Q4 Sportback e-tron: the first cars to unknowingly carry the new names. Both use the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform and are compatible with the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5. Big changes are coming in 2025.
- Audi Q8 e-tron: whose future is currently uncertain. Production will move from Brussels to Mexico, with the Q6 e-tron, where it will probably be equipped with more cutting-edge mechanics.
The words of the Audi manager
Oliver HoffmanAudi managerin an interview he stated that the even and odd numbers will serve to clarify the differences between the two types of engines, he also clarified:
“It’s about having a more comprehensible structure. For example, we have the Q5 in the price list and we could have said that there is the conventional Q5 and the Q5 e-tron, but we decided on a clearer strategy for our range.”.
