New arrival in Hinwil
2025 will be the last season of Stake F1 Team Sauber before it comes under the control of Audi from the following year. While waiting for this transformation, the German company is already working to strengthen its technical structure, and the confirmation of this commitment came from the recent official announcement communicated by the current team, with the announcement of the arrival of an old acquaintance of Formula 1, as well as an Italian figure: Stefano Sordo.
The past in Red Bull and McLaren
He will fill the role of Performance Director, adding another chapter to his long and proven track record in the top flight and other top-level competitions. Suffice it to say that his Formula 1 career began in 2000 as race engineer at Arrowsa role subsequently held also in Jaguar and in the newborn Red Bullas well as a brief parenthesis in Red Bull. It was with the Milton Keynes manufacturer that Sordo contributed to the team’s first world championship successes from 2007 to 2016 as Director of Aerodynamic Performance, before moving on to McLaren as Performance Director. A stay in Woking interrupted in 2022, before moving to the United States as Technical Director of the Rahal Letterman Racing team in IndyCar and IMSA.
Seidl’s welcome
Great coup therefore for Audi, with Andreas Seidl, CEO of the Sauber Group, who in the meantime welcomed the Italian engineer to the team: “Stefano’s appointment is an important step in the development of the structure of our technical department – he has declared – Stefano knows what a winning team needs, he brings with him a wealth of experience and, thanks to the different roles he has held in the past, he is perfectly capable of analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of our technical operations and addressing what it is necessary. At Hinwil we have a strong technical team and Stefano’s appointment will help us harness these skills and turn them into performance as we continue at this crucial time for our structure, with the Audi F1 works team being prepared for its debut.”
Sordo’s first words
A new experience for Sordo, who enthusiastically commented on his entry into the team: “I am delighted to be joining Stake F1 Team KICK Sauber and taking on a role that will have a direct impact on unlocking the performance we already have within our company, helping it reach new heights – stated the new Performance Director – the team is at a crucial moment in its history, with the start of the Audi adventure just around the corner, and I look forward to the challenge that lies ahead. I’m excited about what the future holds for us: the goals the team has set are ambitious, but I see a lot of confidence from everyone within this organization.”
