Atlético Nacional is experiencing one of the most difficult semesters in its history. It was prematurely eliminated from the Copa Libertadores, at the hands of Nacional of Paraguay, and has now been eliminated from the League's semifinal quadrangles.
The defeat against Deportivo Pereira 0-1 on Wednesday, at the Atanasio Girardot stadium, sentenced the team's elimination two dates from the end of the round-robin phase.
Nacional was not left out of the fight for a place among the eight with so much anticipation since the 2009-II League, when it had the worst performance in short tournaments: it was penultimate among 18 teams.
This semester, Nacional already had a technical change on the fly, with the departure of Jhon Bodmer and the arrival of the Uruguayan Pablo Repetto. But the decision was also made to change the sports management of the club, which was left in the hands of the Argentine Gustavo Fermani.
“Atlético Nacional informs the public that during the board of directors session on March 22, Mauricio Navarro De Bedout made his position as president of the institution available,” the club confirmed in a statement.
”Aware of the difficulties and complexities that Mauricio faced during his time in the presidency, the members of the board recognize his effort and dedication to strengthen the financial, administrative, training and sports projection processes, among others, seeking the sustainability of the team in the medium and long term,” added the document, which indicates that Navarro will remain in office until April 30.
Who will be the new president of Nacional?
Several press versions already take as a fact the arrival to the position of Sebastián Arango Botero, 39 years old, who today is the real estate commercial manager of Grupo Éxito.
Arango, a Nacional fan, is an administrative engineer at the Antioquia School of Engineers.
