Jakob Ingebrigtsen regrets that he could have run much faster.
Norwegian expectations at the World Championships in Eugene were high early Wednesday with the men’s 1,500-meter run and 400-meter hurdles.
A fencer Karsten Warholm was down with an injury, but the Tokyo Olympic champion by Jakob Ingebrigtsen was expected to be in the title race at 1,500 meters.
Expectations turned into disappointmentswhen Ingebrigtsen was beaten in the scrimmage and Warholm fell to seventh place, the penultimate place in the final.
of Great Britain Jake Wightman surprised Ingebrigtsen in the final stretch of 1,500 meters, with 250 meters to go. Wightman ran a time of 3:29.23, while Ingebrigtsen finished 24 hundredths behind with a time of 3:29.47.
Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten says that Ingebrigtsen was very self-critical after the race.
“It was terrible,” Ingebrigtsen told the press.
Silver clearly not to the runner’s taste, even though it is the 21-year-old’s first World Cup medal. Brother Filip Ingebrigtsen achieved World Championship bronze in 2017 on the same trip.
“It means nothing to me. For many others, it is Norway’s first silver medal. Filip has bronze and I have silver. It’s great for Norwegian sports history, but I don’t value it that much. It’s nice to get a medal, but I’m very focused on working and achieving my goals. This was not my goal,” Ingebrigtsen said.
The Norwegian runner started to catch up with the others early on. After the race, he regretted not running faster. They say there would have been bangs for that.
“This is my own fault. We ran fast, but I could have run much faster, I felt so good. That’s why I’m so disappointed.”
On Friday, Ingebrigtsen still has a chance for the championship when they run 5,000 meters.
June Warholm, who injured his hamstring in the Diamond League, took his performance calmly.
Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation NRK’s in the interview, he says that he is disappointed, but the ranking is understandable given the circumstances. Warholm started well, but the acids struck at the eighth fence and the others went away.
“I came here and did my best. I’m proud of it,” Warholm told NRK.
