Agnes Tirop’s husband Emmanuel Rotich was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of murder.
Kenya police have imprisoned an endurance runner Agnes Tiropin the murder suspect Emmanuel Rotichin.
Tirop, 25, was found dead in his apartment on Wednesday in the town of Iten in western Kenya. Her husband Rotich is suspected of stabbing Tirop in the abdomen and neck several times.
The Kenyan Criminal Investigation Unit reported on Rotich’s arrest on Thursday night on Twitter.
Rotichin is said to have tried to escape the country when he was arrested in Changamwe in the suburbs of Mombasa.
Mombasa is located on the east coast of the country about a hundred kilometers from the border between Kenya and Tanzania.
The Criminal Investigation Unit said Rotich had run into a truck earlier in the day before his arrest on his escape journey when he had tried to avoid a police raid.
Police released pictures of his dented car.
Rotich is said to be currently under interrogation at Changamwe Police Station.
Tirop managed to reach the World Championship bronze at 10,000 meters in 2017 and 2019. He was also the world cross-country champion from 2015.
At the Tokyo Olympics, Tirop was fourth at 5,000 meters. In September, he ran a 10-kilometer road run to a new world record on January 30th.
