Lorenzo Amor presents the Autonomous Award of the year to the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and asks Elma Saiz, Minister of Social Security, Inclusion and Immigration, find an alternative to flexible sick leave so that people with chronic illnesses can work and have a benefit: “I am convinced that we are going to find an alternative to this proposal, because we are sure that people with chronic illnesses can work and have a benefit.”
In the delivery, starring solidarity and recognition of entrepreneurship, the Minister of Social Security, Inclusion and Immigration, who has acknowledged to Amor that they will work to “move towards new models in which from the public we can offer a greater range of rights to cancer patients”this is how Saiz has referred to the words of Love.
Ramón Reyes, president of the AECC, has received the award on behalf of the workers and more than 1,500 researchers and 35,000 volunteers of the association. “It is very important for us to receive this award, but I want to highlight that of the 300,000 people diagnosed, a third are of working age and 13,000 are self-employed.” So, wanted to put the focus on “this group (self-employed)”, highlighting the double uncertainty they face in the disease: “Cancer, which produces uncertainty and fear, is greater in the case of the self-employed, since it is linked to the uncertainty of the company. Cancer produces an economic impact on the sick, with very high expenses and lack of income” , this is how the situation of 13,000 people in Spain has been demonstrated.
Next, Reyes referred to Amor’s plea, highlighting the labor reintegration of cancer patients: “Cancer poses a problem in returning to work and we are in conversations with the minister and CEOE, it is an issue that we had to address because cancer is increasing in younger people, but survival is increasing. There are more and more survivors and we have to articulate an open and constructive dialogue with the ministry so that rights are recognized and a progressive incorporation is legislated since, in some cases, the future of their company can be put at risk,” he stated. the president of the AECC.
